I searched around the internet and found this picture of a race that Mike did in Wisconsin last weekend.
Notice there isn't even an actual trail, the grass is just cut real short where you're supposed to ride.
This is mountain biking?
Let's all take a moment and appreciate the riding we have here in Southern California.

Yep, you sure do have it good! I should have been suspect when the course description made a special point to note the "sections of dirt single track", as if this were some kind of luxury.
What you can't tell from the pictures is that the ground under the short grass was pretty much like a washboard, which made it especially comfortable after 15 miles of hard riding on my steel hardtail.
